The highlights of the Augsburg
Augsburg was founded by the Romans more than two thousand years ago and ranks among the oldest cities in Germany. Its years as a trading power, the Reformation and the industrial age have all left traces in the old town, and they sit close together.
Well-known sights in the heart of Augsburg
Several landmarks stand within a few steps of one another around Rathausplatz: the town hall built by Elias Holl, the Perlach Tower and the Augustus Fountain. A little further on rises the cathedral, with remains of the Roman city wall preserved along one side.
To the east lies the Lechviertel canal quarter and, within it, the Fuggerei. Founded in 1521, it is considered the world’s oldest social housing settlement still in use, and the symbolic annual rent of 0.88 euros has not changed to this day. Just how wealthy this trading city once was becomes clear at the Damenhof, the Schaezlerpalais and the Maximilian Museum.
Away from the famous names, there are stops that appear on no conventional list of sights: the Stadtmetzg, the Stoinerne Ma or the old silversmith’s workshop. Better known are the Augsburger Puppenkiste, the Leopold Mozart House and the Brecht House, which are also on the route.
Why Augsburg is perfect for a scavenger hunt
The distances are short. Rathausplatz is a few minutes’ walk from Königsplatz, and even the outlying stops are within walking distance without the group falling apart. The route stays varied all the same: grand squares give way to narrow lanes, old city gates such as the Vogeltor and the Wertachbrucker Tor, and quiet paths along the water.
On top of that come two themes that hardly any other German city can tell in the same way. The first is water: fountains, canals and the water towers at the Rotes Tor supplied Augsburg as far back as the Middle Ages and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
The second is the Reformation. The Peace of Augsburg was concluded here in 1555, and to this day Augsburg is the only German city with a public holiday of its own.
